Invitations

Invitations for an informal dinner party are normally given by telephone. This is also perfectly acceptable for larger, casual parties but it can take a lot of time and effort to telephone everybody involved, so most people opt for written invitations. Don’t forget that your invitations should state not only the time and place, but also what type of party it will be, such as ‘ Buffet Supper’, ‘Lunch’, ‘Cheese and Wine’, ‘ Snacks’ or whatever is appropriate. An invitation to sherry or cocktails automatically assume that only small cocktails snacks will be served.

Although a written invitation to a formal party such as a wedding or coming-of-age should normally receive a written reply, a note at the bottom that says ‘R.S.V.P’, and gives your telephone number is often appreciated. Keep a list of the people you have invited and check them off as they reply, so that you can add up the numbers at the last moment.
